AI Isn’t Coming for Your Job. It’s Coming to Sit Next to You.
There’s a moment right before I go live on air where I used to just… freeze. Staring at a blank rundown sheet, coffee going cold, fifteen minutes to fill and no angle on the story. That moment doesn’t happen to me anymore. Not because I got better at my job overnight, but because I found a co-writer who never sleeps, never gets tired of my questions, and never once said “we don’t have time for that.”
I’m a radio host. My job is to sound confident, interesting, and human—three things you might not expect a machine to help with. But here’s the truth: for a while now, AI chatbots have quietly become part of my prep routine. I don’t give them the mic. Instead, I give them the jumble of ideas in my head, and they give me something I can use: an outline, a new angle, or a question I hadn’t thought of. Then I rewrite it in my own voice and walk into the booth sounding sharper than I would have on my own.
That experience is the whole reason I’m writing this.
The Fear Is Old. It Just Has a New Face
Every generation hears a version of this story: the machines are coming for us. In movies, it’s always dramatic—cold, calculating robots decide humanity is no longer needed and take over a ruined world. Films like Terminator and I, Robot gave that fear a face and a soundtrack, and it stuck. It’s a great story and it sells tickets, but it’s not what’s really happening in hospitals, factories, or radio booths in 2026.
The AI most of us actually use doesn’t want to run the world. It wants to help you write the email, plan the outline, or sketch the graphic — and then it steps back and waits for the next thing you need. It has no ambition of its own. The ambition is still ours. That distinction matters more than any movie poster.
Where the “Threat” Argument Falls Apart: Look at Surgery
If you want proof that intelligent machines can make humans better at their jobs instead of replacing them, look at the operating room.
Robotic-assisted surgery systems — the da Vinci system is the best-known example — don’t operate on anyone by themselves. A surgeon sits at a console and controls every movement; the robot simply translates that human’s hand, wrist, and finger motion into smaller, steadier, more precise action inside the body. The newest da Vinci platform can apply significantly less force on tissue than a human hand alone, and it filters out natural hand tremor entirely, which means more precision, less trauma, and often faster recovery for the patient. There are now well over a thousand of these systems installed in hospitals worldwide, and they’ve been used in hundreds of thousands of procedures, most heavily in urology, gynecology, and general surgery.
The surgeon didn’t get replaced. The surgeon got an extension of their own hands that’s steadier than any hand has ever been. That’s not a threat. That’s a superpower with a scalpel.
The same pattern shows up on the factory floor. Robotics in production lines has, for years, been used for repetitive, high-precision, or physically punishing tasks — freeing up human workers for the parts of the job that need judgment, creativity, and adaptability. It’s not “robots vs. workers.” It’s robots doing the part of the job nobody enjoyed anyway, so the humans can focus on the part that actually needs a human.
My Own Turning Point: Learning Digital Marketing
I’ll be honest about why this topic matters to me personally. A while back I decided to learn digital marketing — not because I wanted to leave radio, but because I realized the world I broadcast into is a digital one now. My audience isn’t just tuning in on a car radio anymore; they’re finding clips on social media, reading show notes online, following the station’s page.
I used AI tools to learn faster than I would have on my own — to understand content strategy, to draft captions, to think through what makes a post land versus fall flat. And what I felt, honestly, was relief. Life got a little easier. I could produce more, and produce it better, without burning out trying to become an expert in five different skills overnight.
That’s the part people miss in the doom-and-gloom version of this conversation. AI didn’t hand me a shortcut around learning. It handed me a faster way into learning.
The Toolbox Is Bigger Than You Think

None of these tools does the job for you. They do the job with you — and the difference between those two words is the whole argument.
So, Is AI a Threat?
I don’t think so. I think it’s an add-on — a second set of hands that never gets tired, a first draft that never judges you for not having the perfect idea yet, a nudge in the right direction when the blank page is winning.
The jobs that disappear won’t disappear because AI took them. They’ll change because the humans doing them learned to work alongside something new — the same way radio itself changed when television arrived, and changed again when the internet did, and is changing again now. We didn’t stop needing voices. We just needed those voices to keep adapting.
So use the tools. Learn the tools. Let them do the heavy lifting on the first draft so you can spend your energy on the part only you can do — the part that sounds, unmistakably, like you.
That’s not a threat to your future. That’s an invitation to build it.
